Bad, Crush, and Dogs: What? No, the leash around the collar serves a two fold purpose. Discipline and if needed, airway control. When a K9 gets out of line or won't listen, you slightly give a tug downward on the leash to being the pup Back to Basics. It gives them a quick reminder to get in line. Now to talk about airway control, this is a last resort. Say your dog gets a bite and simply starts seeing red. Meaning all training is out the window and primal instincts kick in. If they won't respond to an out command, then the collar is used to "choke them out". If you apply pressure to the neck, 9 out of 10 times they will let go. The 1 out of 10 is they pass out or you gotta stick your thumb down their throat to get them to gag. You can't do any of the above with a harness TLDR; having the leash on the collar is correct. (Btw this is for LEO K9s, not really for your everyday pups, I highly recommend harnesses for your at home dog.) permalink source embed save save-RES parent report give award reply hide child comments 529 points 10 hours ago Dude what? Misinformation galore LEO K9 handler here. First of all, you NEVER EVER EVER put your finger inside the mouth of a police dog who is on the bite. Where the hell did you get that info? That's a great way to literally lose a finger. So stupid Yes, you should use a PINCH collar around the dog's neck. Never a flat or choke collar for corrections. Flat collars can crush the dog's esophagus. Choke collars can also, AND they can also cause the dog to pass out (also a terrible method to rely on for getting a dog to release, where did you get that info?). Pinch collars cause more discomfort to the dog than a choke, but they don't actually HURT the dog,and have a stop point well before the point of actually choking the dog. It's a much safer, more humane, and more effective way to correct a dog or gain compliance Another safe, humane, and very effective tool for training a dog (and my favorite) is an electronic collar. E collars have unfairly gotten a bad reputation, caused by people who have no idea how to use them. Simply put, you start at zero and slowly go up until you find the point where it's just starting to get the dogs attention. That's your baseline. You can go up from there for an emergency correction, but you never ever fry the dog You never ever choke the dog out to the point of losing consciousness. If the dog needs to be choked unconscious to get off the bite, he should absolutely NOT be a police dog A bit of QYB in WCGW
