If youā€™re like me and have a large gap under your front door (someone could take a stick and just poke the leaning stick style door jam out), I recommend the Addalock. Itā€™s small, perfect for traveling, and this lock is CRAZY. Itā€™s so simple but the door does not move. 
You canā€™t see it from the other side, either. It also cost about $20, and I canā€™t recommend it enough. Easy to travel with, too! Great for Air BnBs!




Thatā€™s why I have these on my doors. They get drilled into the side and once its flipped over the door nothing is getting it open. Not the door being unlocked nothing, Iā€™ve unlocked the door and pulled and pushed as hard as I could and it didnā€™t budge. When I go on a trip this is what I use and when Iā€™m home I leave it on too. No one is getting in here.

Okay I know that it is necessary for many but what do you do if you need medical attention and youā€™re not able to open the door from the inside? Can the fire department get through these at least?Ā Ā 

Yes. The fire department can and will break down your door if necessary, itā€™s one of the reasons they have axes; itā€™s entirely possible for door frames to melt/expand/seize or otherwise become unopenable during a house fire but the door itself can be hacked down. Or the window. In rare cases, the wall. Firefighters donā€™t fuck around with collateral damage when lives are at stake.

 when I'm inside the house and I asked
 him how he knows that and he told
 me with a straight face that he has
 tried to open it some nights to 'greet
 me'.

I think heā€™s actually from the Merby group. Itā€™s a bunch dudes with facial hair who get together, put on tails, and do a photoshoot. 
This photoshoot gets turned into a calendar which is then sold and most (if not all) proceeds go to charity. 
Their most recent charity went to VPNL, which according to their website  ā€œworks diligently throughout the province to change attitudes, behaviours, and social norms associated with violence. VPNL organizations provide violence prevention and early intervention services to those most at risk of experiencing violence: women, children and youth, Indigenous women and children, older persons, persons with disabilities, persons of varying race or ethnicity, LGBTQ+ persons, and persons of varying economic status.ā€
They also currently have applications open for new merbys!
Aside from it going to a great cause, itā€™s also a super funny & cute calendar! It makes for a great gift. I got two in 2018! 
Oh and theyā€™re also hella inclusive and socially conscious. One of my favorite quotes from the Merby site: 
ā€œInclusion is our jam. Humans of all genders, ethnicities, faiths, abilities and ages are welcome.  the author know? Like are they aware that their
 significant other is a serial killer or do they just think
 that they have a morbid sense of humor? It'd be
 even funnier if the author had no fucking clue, like
 how Aurthur Conan Doyle was apparently stupidly
 gullible, and on top of it they're a horror or crime
 novelist. Like the serial killer works at a butcher shop
 or something so it's completely normal for them to
 come home smelling like blood, no murders going on
 here, no sirey. Just my darling coming back home
 from a long day at work.
 Now fast forward a bit and the author has managed
 to get their first book published, with loving support
 from the serial killer who helped them fine tune all
 the murder scenes, and it's a big hit. Enough so that
 detective with the local police department has
 noticed some disturbing similarities to several active
 cases, including details that were never released to
 the press. Obviously he brings this up to his superior
 and convinces him that there's something to the
 theory, but it's all circumstantial right now. He stakes
 out the author's home and is super convinced that
 the author is the murderer, but they don't seem to do
 anything??? Like they literally are at the house all
 day, that's it. Most they do is leave for groceries.
 So you get this dynamic of the serial killer mining the
 author for creative murder schemes, the author
 being lovingly encouraged by the serial killer, and
 finally the detective who is just so sure that the
 author is the killer and that if he sticks it out long
 enough he'll FINALLY have proof.
