Anaconda, Community, and Family: Florida Woman Marries 100-Year-Old Tree To Save lt From Being Chopped Down: "If They Cut Down This Tree, l'm Going To Be A Widow" @balleralert Florida Woman Marries 100-Year-Old Tree To Save It From Being Chopped Down: “If They Cut Down This Tree, I’m Going To Be A Widow” – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In an effort to save a 100-year-old tree, a Florida woman has asked for its branch in marriage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to The Miami Herald, the tree became part of a neighborhood controversy after Fort Myers city staff discussed chopping it down last year, despite its history in the Snell Family Park. However, after months of planning, the city agreed to a $13,000 spending budget to chop the tree, which in turn, sparked widespread backlash among those fond of the giant ficus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In fact, one woman took matters into her own hands, using tips from women who’ve been protesting deforestation in Mexico. Over the weekend, Karen Cooper jumped the broom with the tree in an attempt to save it from being cut down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a waterfront ceremony that took place on Saturday, Cooper and a slew of other women who were dressed in white vowed to honor and protect the tree. The wedding was filled with the works, including flowers, a tree-decorated wedding cake, and a canine ring-bearer, as it was staged just three days before Tuesday’s meeting about the tree’s fate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then though, a spokesperson for the city, revealed that it is moving forward to save the beloved tree. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Everyday city employees care for the trees and plants that give our city a sense of community and shared history,” the spokesperson said. However, the tree’s fate is not completely secure just yet, Cooper says. Tuesday will be the determining factor, and if the Beautification Board does not agree to save the tree, the city’s councilman vowed to bring the issue to City Council. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "If they cut down this tree, I'm going to be a widow," Cooper said.

MoviePass, a movie-ticket subscription service that allows users to attend one movie a day for $6.95 a month (reducing the cost of a single ticket to significantly less than the national average,) is about to surpass 3 million total users in its first 5 months. ___ As streaming services like Netflix and Hulu increase in popularity, movie theaters have been trying to reinvent the theater experience by reimagining the concession counter and making seats more luxurious. Even so, theater attendance did not increase in 2016, and experts are predicting a 4 percent decline in 2017 (a 22-year low). ___ Movie pass provides hope for attendance numbers in the future, even though theater companies are wary of the introduction of the new service. Via NBC News: "A family is pleading for the public’s help after their loved one – a street vendor - was robbed and brutally beaten right before his shift. Pedro Reyes, 54, was among a group of street vendors setting up shop around 5 a.m. Sunday at San Pedro Street and 31st Street in South Los Angeles. Two vehicles pulled up and a group of young men inside demanded money from three street vendors, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Reyes told detectives he threw his money at the suspects and ran – and that’s when they chased after him and beat him up. His stepson told NBC4 that the group of people knocked out three of Reyes' teeth, cut his throat, fractured his face and left him unconscious. Reyes was the most severely hurt – the other two vendors had minor injuries and were not taken to the hospital. Police say the suspects took money from all three of them, though. Reyes remains hospitalized at California Hospital Medical Center in downtown Los Angeles. He's set to undergo surgery Monday on his face. Speaking from his hospital bed, Reyes said six men attacked him, leaving him unconscious and waking up in the hospital. His stepson said doctors are estimating it will take Reyes at least six months to fully recover from the attack. He does not have health insurance and a GoFundMe has so far raised almost $40,000 for his medical costs. He said his father is a man who works everyday – does roofing six days a week and on Sundays sells fruit. His main worry now is how to support his family. If you would like to donate to a GoFundMe account set up for Pedro Reyes, you may do so here. Note that GoFundMe deducts 2.9 percent of all funds raised, plus 30 cents per donation, in the form of payment processing charges."
