Iā€™m really not understanding why you think cultural appropriation would be ok, unless you are assuming that the girl in the picture is part Japanese.

I disagree. The makeup is clearly reflective of traditional Geisha makeup which is yellowface and therefore racist. Furthermore, the girl is wearing a kimono, a garment that has for ages carried cultural significance. Assuming that she is white how can you think this is ok? And cultural appropriation isnā€™t a thing? What rock do you live under? I suggest you educate yourself on the differences between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect. 
And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not ā€œyellow faceā€ they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work. 
The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

Recently a museum in Boston came under a lot of fire for allowing visitors to wear aĀ ā€˜kimonoā€™ (it was featuring a painting my Monet of a girl ā€“ a white girl ā€“ in a kimono, and the museum had replicas made that guests of ANY RACE could wear to mimic the painting, Pageant-of-the-Masters style). After protests and heated debate, the museum closed the event.
I was living in Japan at the time, and out of all the *actual* Japanese people I asked, not a single one was offended by the event. Rather, they were excited that people half a world away were showing interest in their culture, and were sad that visitors could no longer enjoy the event.
This party, though somewhat silly in application, is an attempt at experiencing and appreciating another culture. The mom who put this together is not an expert on Japan, but she did her best. She got a lot of things right: there are few things Japan loves more than tea, Pocky, and sakura.Ā 
Where do you draw the line for who isĀ ā€œallowedā€ to learn about Japan? If the girl were of Japanese descent, would that make it ok (even though her citizenship would be the same as the girl from the photo)? If one of the girlā€™s parents were from Japan, then would it be ok?Ā 
Are you only allowed to make pizza if you live in Italy? If youā€™re an Italian immigrant? How do we decide these things??
You canā€™t say you want to dismantle racism and then in the next breath make rules ā€“ based on race ā€“ for who people can wear, try, or eat, especially when the intent is obviously to have fun experiencing a culture (as opposed to having fun by making fun of a race or culture, like blackface does).Ā 
When you tell people they can only experience things ā€˜meant for their raceā€™, it totally smacks of segregation to me and I canā€™t stand it. As someone who (obviously) loves Japan, I say let people learn about it, let people experience it, let people appreciate it. You donā€™t have to know every single thing about a culture to enjoy it.

Can I please just talk about MCU Proxima Midnight I love her so much and have SO MANY feelings about her aaaaah

Yā€™all know I love reinterpreting Marvel aliens I like so here are some notes on my design of her because I love coming up with alien physiology/biology:- I turned her warpaint into facial markings so thatā€™s just her skin now- She got a lot of markings tbh because I want them- Sheā€™s got very fine scales as opposed to human like skin, cream colored scales are a lot finer and harder to see, you canā€™t really tell unless youā€™re looking VERY closely (which means soft tummy huehuehue) skin textureā€™s similar to a snake in terms of feel but the scales are fairly tough, especially the closer you get to the spine.- Back spines can raise and lower like hackles but can also beĀ ā€˜lockedā€™ down when she needs to wear something (tho theyā€™ll flare up when any feelings are at level 100)- Shiny blue iridescence thatā€™s primarily confined to the darkest blue scales-Ā ā€œWhiteā€ scales are really just blue reflecting the light so she has that shimmery night sky look because hello somebody- Light blue lines are for regulating body temperature- particularly for cooling. Skin is very thin there with blood vessels being close to the surface (hence why theyā€™re blue bc her blood is a light blue color) to let off heat. The vents can expand and contract based on whether she needs to hold or release body heat. (Sheā€™s been described in canon to have a really low body temperature, actually feeling cold to the touch so sheā€™s constantly venting heat through cooling her blood.) Theyā€™re also very sensitive ofc, important information.- Sharp nailsĀ - Also sharp teeth because I must remain on brand- And ofc sheā€™s buff as hell

A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect. 
And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not ā€œyellow faceā€ they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work. 
The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

Recently a museum in Boston came under a lot of fire for allowing visitors to wear aĀ ā€˜kimonoā€™ (it was featuring a painting my Monet of a girl ā€“ a white girl ā€“ in a kimono, and the museum had replicas made that guests of ANY RACE could wear to mimic the painting, Pageant-of-the-Masters style). After protests and heated debate, the museum closed the event.
I was living in Japan at the time, and out of all the *actual* Japanese people I asked, not a single one was offended by the event. Rather, they were excited that people half a world away were showing interest in their culture, and were sad that visitors could no longer enjoy the event.
This party, though somewhat silly in application, is an attempt at experiencing and appreciating another culture. The mom who put this together is not an expert on Japan, but she did her best. She got a lot of things right: there are few things Japan loves more than tea, Pocky, and sakura.Ā 
Where do you draw the line for who isĀ ā€œallowedā€ to learn about Japan? If the girl were of Japanese descent, would that make it ok (even though her citizenship would be the same as the girl from the photo)? If one of the girlā€™s parents were from Japan, then would it be ok?Ā 
Are you only allowed to make pizza if you live in Italy? If youā€™re an Italian immigrant? How do we decide these things??
You canā€™t say you want to dismantle racism and then in the next breath make rules ā€“ based on race ā€“ for who people can wear, try, or eat, especially when the intent is obviously to have fun experiencing a culture (as opposed to having fun by making fun of a race or culture, like blackface does).Ā 
When you tell people they can only experience things ā€˜meant for their raceā€™, it totally smacks of segregation to me and I canā€™t stand it. Everything about her - from her music to her social media - is carefully crafted-curated by a team of dozens of people who make their living off of her. She has the fourth largest IG account with 136M followers. She donā€™t just walk into a bathroom bust a selfie and post it like yā€™all. She got a team of former Facebook-IG employees who analyze IG activity to the millisecond and post content that will guarantee growth and exposure of her account. And her music is cranked out by the same old balding men in creepy black nike caps, bad tans and tight jeans who managed Guns N Roses-Metallica in the 80s and now have decided that dressing a grown woman up as a lil girl with bows in her hair is the wave. Donā€™t ever get lost in the sauce. NOBODYā€™s heart is built like that. NOBODY invest they entire existence someone and then by the next day they like ā€œthank u nextā€. Thatā€™s a tag line only someone with a sick heart (in a black nike baseball cap šŸ˜‚) could devise. Itā€™s not real. Love is a gift. Sometimes the world gets in the way. Donā€™t stop loving with all your heart. My friend said ā€œWhat if I never meet anyone who makes me feel like that? Or worse, what if I canā€™t let myself feel like that with someone who deserves it bc he fvcked up my sense of trust so bad?ā€ Well bish thatā€™s how the heart works lol! Thatā€™s how u feel when u in love and it get torn apart! U feel like maybe u never gon be in love again! Nah. A merciful God ainā€™t build us like that and God is indeed merciful. Give it time. Iā€™m really not understanding why you think cultural appropriation would be ok, unless you are assuming that the girl in the picture is part Japanese.

Yellow face yet sheā€™s using white makeup in the traditional style but okay.
Cultural appropriation isnā€™t a thing, hon. ā˜ŗļø Cultures should be shared by all means.

I disagree. The makeup is clearly reflective of traditional Geisha makeup which is yellowface and therefore racist. Furthermore, the girl is wearing a kimono, a garment that has for ages carried cultural significance. Assuming that she is white how can you think this is ok? And cultural appropriation isnā€™t a thing? What rock do you live under? I suggest you educate yourself on the differences between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

I am japanese, in japan at this very moment. The only people who think culture shouldnt be shared are racists like you. 
A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect. 
And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not ā€œyellow faceā€ they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work. 
The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

I live in Japan and Iā€™d like to back up this sentiment.Ā 
Recently a museum in Boston came under a lot of fire for allowing visitors to wear aĀ ā€˜kimonoā€™ (it was featuring a painting my Monet of a girl ā€“ a white girl ā€“ in a kimono, and the museum had replicas made that guests of ANY RACE could wear to mimic the painting, Pageant-of-the-Masters style). After protests and heated debate, the museum closed the event.
I was living in Japan at the time, and out of all the *actual* Japanese people I asked, not a single one was offended by the event. Rather, they were excited that people half a world away were showing interest in their culture, and were sad that visitors could no longer enjoy the event.
This party, though somewhat silly in application, is an attempt at experiencing and appreciating another culture. The mom who put this together is not an expert on Japan, but she did her best. She got a lot of things right: there are few things Japan loves more than tea, Pocky, and sakura.Ā 
Where do you draw the line for who isĀ ā€œallowedā€ to learn about Japan? If the girl were of Japanese descent, would that make it ok (even though her citizenship would be the same as the girl from the photo)? If one of the girlā€™s parents were from Japan, then would it be ok?Ā 
Are you only allowed to make pizza if you live in Italy? If youā€™re an Italian immigrant? How do we decide these things??
You canā€™t say you want to dismantle racism and then in the next breath make rules ā€“ based on race ā€“ for who people can wear, try, or eat, especially when the intent is obviously to have fun experiencing a culture (as opposed to having fun by making fun of a race or culture, like blackface does).Ā 
When you tell people they can only experience things ā€˜meant for their raceā€™, it totally smacks of segregation to me and I canā€™t stand it. As someone who (obviously) loves Japan, I say let people learn about it, let people experience it, let people appreciate it. You donā€™t have to know every single thing about a culture to enjoy it.
