Hello, college grad that actually wrote an award winning paper on this topic! Here’s some knowledge I’d like to share: There’s actually been studies as to why it’s usually white kids, a large conclusion amongst the criminology community is that those that often have more privileged lives (white kids in our society’s case) are less adept to dealing with stress and denial. Whereas minorities and others are more likely to cope and function normally despite stressors because of the constant stressors that come from systematic racism and/or other platforms of more limited priviledge. 
TL;DR: It’s usually a white kid because their privilege incacipated their ability to learn how to handle stress/ denial/ whatever without acting out. The less privileged are done used to the bs and thus typically dont turn to extreme measures as coping mechanisms. 
EDIT: I had reblogged this and added a link to the paper (which I should’ve done to begin with,) but it’s probably best I just edit my original reblog and add the link (which I also should’ve just done already.)

Ugh, okay. The remark by this black woman was disrespectful and based on race. It was rude, bigoted and uncalled for.
But no, in an anti black world, black people do not have the social, political or systemic financial power to be racist. Racism implies that beyond hurting and insulting that asian woman that this black woman is connected to a system that has the power to negatively impact this woman’s existence. That dark skinned black woman who’s an incumbent running for state office likely has about the same amount of systemic power as i do.
And furthermore, there could be an argument made that deteoit is chocolate city and perhaps she does have that infrastructure of black networks to truly effect her opponent, but idk I was in Detroit last year and it looks a lot like Brooklyn does now. White and gentrified. White people with money, who control our political systems, finances, and predominant social narratives are claiming urban space like they’re colonizing pioneers looking to take the new world. Detroit isn’t the same anymore.
Anyway, black people can be shitty insensitive bigots but we do not have the social capital to be racist, particularly not in the united states.

Chang is also a first generation American, while Scott, to my knowledge, is not, and she specifically made anti-immigrant comments. She also has “power” within the context of her own ethnic community and she used that power to direct racism towards other African-Americans who supported Chang by implying they were somehow traitors, essentially dictating how they ought to act based on their race, particularly Chang’s husband for his interracial marriage (I don’t give a flying fuck what race you are, negative comments about interracial marriage and mixed race people are racist. period. end of story). 
Even if I did accept the prejudice + power model or racism (which I don’t as that is neither the etymology or common usage of the word) Cook’s comments would certainly fit the bill. She made race based attacks on people based on types of marginalization that she is exempt from; and did so from a position of power partially gained by the fact that she is exempt from these types of discrimination.   It’s racist. Stop making excuses.

Think about what this is saying and try to deeply consider what this means, especially coming from someone who is not white. No one is saying white people have perfect lives, don't have problems, or even that there's no way they can be bullied-discrimanated against because of how they look. The difference is that racism isn't just a feeling or thought, it's INSTITUTIONALIZED and SYSTEMATIC, which means that you have laws (Jim Crow, housing discrimination, voter ID laws-voter discrimination, redlining), history, powerful figures, etc etc etc against you, not just individuals being rude to you. Yes you can be white and poor, you can be white and be bullied, you can be white and have problems. It's just that these problems are NOT reinforced by or due to a historic, systematic, institutional oppression based solely on your race-ethnicity. In the US for example, the country was built by white men with laws for white men. Over time, many of these laws have changed: ex. everyone has the legal right to vote now, slavery is illegal, Jim Crow laws no longer exist. Unfortunately, these laws don't just end; they evolve. All people can vote, yet voter ID laws disproportionately prevent people of color in poor communities from voting. Slavery is illegal, yet black men disproportionately fill jail cells and are exploited for their labor while privatized prisons profit off their incarceration (see: war on drugs, or "13th" on Netflix). I can list examples like those two all day, but the point is that people of color continue to face institutionalized, systematic racism that has legal & political backing and an entire history causing and justifying it. White people do not have to deal with that, hence the term "white privilege." And, again, no one is saying white people don't have problems. These bother me sometimes.
We all start as literal useless babies. No one gets a magic ticket that makes them better at anything. If someone says they “never practice” it’s probably because they like doing the skill and see it as a fun use of their time instead of “practice”.


I will qualify this a small but I think important amount, because what it is is actually complicated: 
Some people’s brains and nervous systems are wired for better hand-eye coordination. Some people’s brains and nervous systems are wired for better pattern recognition. Or translations of audio input. Or whatever. 
What this does is combine with @jelloapocalypse‘s EXTREMELY WELL-OBSERVED COMMENT (If someone says they “never practice” it’s probably because they like doing the skill and see it as a fun use of their time instead of “practice”.) in a way that can be both invisible and give this kind of person a massive leg up while being really discouraging to someone who doesn’t have that wiring. 
It doesn’t get to the actual original comic’s level of “oh I just started here”. But let’s take two people called Riley and Kennedy, and we’ll do singing, since that’s what I teach. 
Riley and Kennedy have exactly the same kind of background: parents who listen to the radio sometimes, the usual social stuff around popular music of whatever genre, etc, but no formal training. Neither of them sings in a church choir, neither of them falls into a formal disability category, whatever. 
The first time Riley shows up in my studio and we sing a really simple song I use as a diagnostic, she gets it mostly right. She can follow the tune; she can hear pitch, and it takes very little work for her to chivvy her voice into matching that pitch as long as there’s not something pulling her off. (In other words: as long as I’m singing the same notes as her and playing them on the piano, and as long a she can hear both herself and those notes). 
For Riley the lesson is really fun and validating and she goes home and sings along to her own music for a while and comes back next week with six songs she wants to try learning. And most of her lessons are like that: pretty easy positive feedback. That means Riley “practices” a lot in exactly the way @jelloapocalypse describes, even if she doesn’t think she’s actually practicing (that is, sitting down to sing the songs we’re working on together in a systematic way) at all. 
In contrast, the first time Kennedy comes to my studio, she struggles. It’s harder for her to hear the difference between notes, and it’s much harder for her to make her voice actually match the pitch she wants to sing at. When we pull out the diagnostic tune, she mostly manages to drone a few clusters of semi-tones, and while she can hear that she’s Off, it’s actually very hard for her to tell HOW she’s off, or what she should do to correct it. 
In most cases, for Kennedy, lessons - and in fact the overall experience of singing - is not fun. It’s not validating. It’s a whole process of Not Being Good, of Doing Things Wrong, and given the way humans are often in casual situations being laughed at. When Kennedy goes home she doesn’t sing along with any music she plays: she keeps her lips pressed together and at best enjoys other people singing (and maybe feels envious and demeaned because she can’t do it). 
Now the thing is, the practical “skill” difference for Riley and Kennedy here at the beginning is minimal. But the Rileys will tend (if they like what they’re doing) to ROCKET UP THE SKILL LEVEL, because of the “practice is fun so it’s just the thing I do” - because there is always a bunch of validation and positive reinforcement in the act of doing whatever it is, be it doodling or singing or math. 
The Kennedys won’t. In fact if they’re not lucky enough to have a good teacher, and one who can put a lot of this into perspective for them, they will tend to be inhibited. The worst time is when a Riley and a Kennedy are friends and sign up to learn together, and Riley takes off and Kennedy’s left sitting there feeling like she’s somehow Deeply Flawed. 
 And in fact the whole Doctrine of “It’s Just About How Hard You Work” will in and of itself become part of what inhibits them, because they will watch the Rileys - and even the Annas, Anna in this metaphor being the Totally Normal Student who never really exists - grasp things faster than they do, even if they ARE working hard. And this will HAPPEN. They will watch this reality happen in front of them … and then people say to them “oh, it’s all about how hard you work, dear.” And it’s like being gaslit. (Well, to be fair: it IS being gaslit, just without malice intended on the part of the people doing it.) 
And that message is horribly horribly toxic: here Kennedy is, and she IS working hard, but she’s still not progressing as fast as Riley or Anna no matter what she does! But it’s All About Hard Work, right? So that must mean that no matter how hard she THINKS she’s working, she’s actually just lazy, or doesn’t want it enough. It’s clearly a moral flaw in her. 
I actually have, personally, really good luck with teaching the Kennedys because I literally have this conversation with them when they come to my studio. I actually outright tell them: firstly, anyone who has working vocal chords can sing. Anyone who has working vocal chords and the ability to distinguish audio pitch can even sing on key in tune! But some people have an easy time learning this and some people have a hard time, and sometimes which it is has some relationship to, say, “early exposure to music” or whatever but sometimes it seems to be utterly fucking random - pure luck of the draw. 
You CAN SING. The capability is there. And if you want to we will find out how to make it happen. It might not happen as fast as for some other person, it might take more work, it might take more care, but that’s okay: that’s not your fault, that doesn’t mean you’re NOT working hard, but it does mean that here at the beginning we do things like recalibrate victories, we make your progress about YOU, not about Riley or Anna. 
But I’m also not going to gaslight you or make you feel like you’re either delusional or somehow especially So Terrible You Don’t Fit In The Rest Of The World: sure, I’ve got some Riley-types who walk in here, noodle around, and we go on to Art Songs. They exist. 
So what? Tall people exist. People with broad shoulders exist. People with dark hair exist. Physical embodiment and neurology hand out luck of the genetic roulette with no interest in outcomes. If you’re born blonde, it’s always going to take more work for you to have brown hair than someone born with brown hair, but much like dyeing your hair to match what you want, we can train the muscles of your voice and the neural pathways for hearing to do what you want. 
The differences between Rileys and Kennedys are very small. If Riley didn’t discover she liked singing and Kennedy worked at it for years then no, Riley would not “start out” as good as Kennedy is after those years. And you can be Riley and if you DON’T do the fucking work, the Annas of the world especially will blast past you and leave you in the dust. 
But on the other hand the Rileys get this wonderful cycle of positive reinforcement that does often start from a place of their coincidental physical embodiment giving them a slight leg up. And pretending that’s not the case does a big disservice to the Kennedys.

These bother me sometimes.
We all start as literal useless babies. No one gets a magic ticket that makes them better at anything. If someone says they “never practice” it’s probably because they like doing the skill and see it as a fun use of their time instead of “practice”.


I will qualify this a small but I think important amount, because what it is is actually complicated: 
Some people’s brains and nervous systems are wired for better hand-eye coordination. Some people’s brains and nervous systems are wired for better pattern recognition. Or translations of audio input. Or whatever. 
What this does is combine with @jelloapocalypse‘s EXTREMELY WELL-OBSERVED COMMENT (If someone says they “never practice” it’s probably because they like doing the skill and see it as a fun use of their time instead of “practice”.) in a way that can be both invisible and give this kind of person a massive leg up while being really discouraging to someone who doesn’t have that wiring. 
It doesn’t get to the actual original comic’s level of “oh I just started here”. But let’s take two people called Riley and Kennedy, and we’ll do singing, since that’s what I teach. 
Riley and Kennedy have exactly the same kind of background: parents who listen to the radio sometimes, the usual social stuff around popular music of whatever genre, etc, but no formal training. Neither of them sings in a church choir, neither of them falls into a formal disability category, whatever. 
The first time Riley shows up in my studio and we sing a really simple song I use as a diagnostic, she gets it mostly right. She can follow the tune; she can hear pitch, and it takes very little work for her to chivvy her voice into matching that pitch as long as there’s not something pulling her off. (In other words: as long as I’m singing the same notes as her and playing them on the piano, and as long a she can hear both herself and those notes). 
For Riley the lesson is really fun and validating and she goes home and sings along to her own music for a while and comes back next week with six songs she wants to try learning. And most of her lessons are like that: pretty easy positive feedback. That means Riley “practices” a lot in exactly the way @jelloapocalypse describes, even if she doesn’t think she’s actually practicing (that is, sitting down to sing the songs we’re working on together in a systematic way) at all. 
In contrast, the first time Kennedy comes to my studio, she struggles. It’s harder for her to hear the difference between notes, and it’s much harder for her to make her voice actually match the pitch she wants to sing at. When we pull out the diagnostic tune, she mostly manages to drone a few clusters of semi-tones, and while she can hear that she’s Off, it’s actually very hard for her to tell HOW she’s off, or what she should do to correct it. 
In most cases, for Kennedy, lessons - and in fact the overall experience of singing - is not fun. It’s not validating. It’s a whole process of Not Being Good, of Doing Things Wrong, and given the way humans are often in casual situations being laughed at. Imagine a wall full of circular holes, that circles can keep walking in and out of with no difficulty.
Now imagine that the triangles manage to get the resources together, after years of not being able to fit through the circle’s holes, to drill a single triangle space into the wall.
Now imagine that the circle — who previously supported the triangle’s efforts because they are well-rounded (har) and value equality —  comes along and sees the construction project. But instead of being happy, they get angry.
“Well, I won’t be able to fit through your hole!!!!” the circle cries.
“I helped you get the drill!!!!” the circle shrieks.
“Make it fit me too!!!!” the circle demands.
The triangles, barely holding it together enough to get a triangle hole together, stare at the circle in confusion. 
“You have all the holes you need,” the triangles explain. “This is for us. You don’t need to fit through our hole, too.”

Ignoring the Armenian genocide by the last Islamic caliphate</b></h2>
<h2>The genocide of Armenian Christians by Ottoman Muslims was very real, so was the appalling torture. Women were raped and crucified, people had horseshoes nailed to their feet as they were marched through the streets. Unspeakable atrocities were perpetrated. Yet almost no-one in the Islamic world, and too few in the West will acknowledge it even happened.</h2>
<p>As the world continues to look on in dismay at the barbaric atrocities committed against Christian minorities by the Islamic State – the self-proclaimed new “caliphate” – today, April 24, marks the genocide of Armenian and other Christian minorities by Turkey’s Islamic Ottoman Empire, the last caliphate.</p>
<p>Most <a href="http://www.anca.org/genocide/denial.php">American historians</a> who have examined the question agree that what the Armenians experienced was a deliberate, calculated genocide:</p>
<p>More than one million Armenians perished as the result of execution, starvation, disease, the harsh environment, and physical abuse. A people who lived in eastern Turkey for nearly 3,000 years [that is, 2,500 years before the Islamic Turks invaded and occupied Anatolia, now known as “Turkey”] lost its homeland and was profoundly decimated in the first large-scale genocide of the twentieth century. At the beginning of 1915 there were some two million Armenians within Turkey; today there are fewer than 60,000.</p>
<p>One-and-a-half million Armenians were eradicated. If early 20<sup>th</sup> century Turkey had had the apparatuses and technology to execute in mass – such as 1940s Germany’s gas chambers – the entire Armenian population could well have been annihilated.</p>
<p>The atrocities suffered by Armenian and other Christian minorities are too long to list. As occurs under the current caliphate – the Islamic State – the Muslims of the Ottoman caliphate abducted, raped, and slaughtered or sold countless Christian women and children on the Muslim slave markets.</p>
<p>Armenian Christians were also sadistically tortured – as Christians are today under the Islamic State.</p>
<p>On <a href="http://www.frontpagemag.com/2015/lloyd-billingsley/the-islamic-state-then-and-now/">FrontPage Magazine</a>, Lloyd Billingsley writes:</p>
<p>Torture squads would apply red-hot irons, tear off flesh with hot pincers, then pour boiled butter into the wounds. The soles of the feet would be beaten, slashed, and laced with salt. Dr. Mehmed Reshid tortured Armenians by nailing horseshoes to their feet and marching them through the streets. He also crucified them on makeshift crosses.</p>
<p>The Muslims hacked Armenians to pieces and dashed infants on the rocks before their mothers. They burned bodies not for sanitary reasons but in search of gold coins they believed the Armenians had swallowed. The Muslims also tore apart the victims’ feces in the search for gold. U.S. consul Leslie Davis, a former attorney and journalist, documented the Islamic zeal.</p>
<p>“We could all hear them piously calling upon Allah to bless them in their efforts to kill the hated Christians,” Davis wrote. “Night after night this same chant went up to heaven and day after day these Turks carried on their bloody work.” Around Lake Goeljik, Davis wrote, “thousands and thousands of Armenians, mostly innocent and helpless women and children, were butchered on its shores and barbarously mutilated.”</p>
<p>In her memoir, Ravished Armenia, <a href="http://www.genocide-museum.am/eng/online_exhibition_6.php">Aurora Mardiganian</a> described being raped and thrown into a harem – <a href="http://www.raymondibrahim.com/islam/muhammad-and-islams-sex-slaves/">akin to the experiences of today’s non-Muslims under Islamic State authority</a>.</p>
<p>Unlike thousands of other Armenian girls who were killed after being defiled, she managed to escape. <p>Because there is no dearth of evidence concerning the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide, 44 U.S. States have recognized it. South Dakota, which recently joined the list, <a href="http://armenianweekly.com/2015/02/26/south-dakota/">passed a resolution</a> in February 2015 calling on</p>
<p>Congress and the president of the United States to formally and consistently recognize and reaffirm the historical truth that the atrocities committed against the Armenian, Greek, and other Christians living in their historical homelands in Anatolia constituted genocide and to work towards equitable, stable, and durable Armenian-Turkish relations.</p>
<p>Turkey, of course, continues to deny that its forbears ever committed any genocide. As a group of American academics <a href="http://www.anca.org/assets/pdf/armenian_genocide_reference/professionalethics_lifton.pdf">wrote back in 1995</a>,</p>
<p>Despite the vast amount of evidence that points to the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide – eyewitness accounts, official archives, photographic evidence, the reports of diplomats, and the testimony of survivors – denial of the Armenian Genocide by successive regimes in Turkey has gone on from 1915 to the present.</p>
<p>Nor is the Islamic government of Turkey alone in denying the genocide. President Obama still refuses to acknowledge it – even though when he was running for office in 2008 <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20081117033141/http:/www.barackobama.com/2008/01/19/barack_obama_on_the_importance.php">he professed his</a>:</p>

<p>But the president’s actions are consistent in other ways. Ignoring the Armenian genocide by the last Islamic caliphate</b></h2>
<h2>The genocide of Armenian Christians by Ottoman Muslims was very real, so was the appalling torture. Women were raped and crucified, people had horseshoes nailed to their feet as they were marched through the streets. Unspeakable atrocities were perpetrated. Yet almost no-one in the Islamic world, and too few in the West will acknowledge it even happened.</h2>
<p>As the world continues to look on in dismay at the barbaric atrocities committed against Christian minorities by the Islamic State – the self-proclaimed new “caliphate” – today, April 24, marks the genocide of Armenian and other Christian minorities by Turkey’s Islamic Ottoman Empire, the last caliphate.</p>
<p>Most <a href="http://www.anca.org/genocide/denial.php">American historians</a> who have examined the question agree that what the Armenians experienced was a deliberate, calculated genocide:</p>
<p>More than one million Armenians perished as the result of execution, starvation, disease, the harsh environment, and physical abuse. A people who lived in eastern Turkey for nearly 3,000 years [that is, 2,500 years before the Islamic Turks invaded and occupied Anatolia, now known as “Turkey”] lost its homeland and was profoundly decimated in the first large-scale genocide of the twentieth century. At the beginning of 1915 there were some two million Armenians within Turkey; today there are fewer than 60,000.</p>
<p>One-and-a-half million Armenians were eradicated. If early 20<sup>th</sup> century Turkey had had the apparatuses and technology to execute in mass – such as 1940s Germany’s gas chambers – the entire Armenian population could well have been annihilated.</p>
<p>The atrocities suffered by Armenian and other Christian minorities are too long to list. As occurs under the current caliphate – the Islamic State – the Muslims of the Ottoman caliphate abducted, raped, and slaughtered or sold countless Christian women and children on the Muslim slave markets.</p>
<p>Armenian Christians were also sadistically tortured – as Christians are today under the Islamic State.</p>
<p>On <a href="http://www.frontpagemag.com/2015/lloyd-billingsley/the-islamic-state-then-and-now/">FrontPage Magazine</a>, Lloyd Billingsley writes:</p>
<p>Torture squads would apply red-hot irons, tear off flesh with hot pincers, then pour boiled butter into the wounds. The soles of the feet would be beaten, slashed, and laced with salt. Dr. Mehmed Reshid tortured Armenians by nailing horseshoes to their feet and marching them through the streets. He also crucified them on makeshift crosses.</p>
<p>The Muslims hacked Armenians to pieces and dashed infants on the rocks before their mothers. They burned bodies not for sanitary reasons but in search of gold coins they believed the Armenians had swallowed. The Muslims also tore apart the victims’ feces in the search for gold. U.S. consul Leslie Davis, a former attorney and journalist, documented the Islamic zeal.</p>
<p>“We could all hear them piously calling upon Allah to bless them in their efforts to kill the hated Christians,” Davis wrote. “Night after night this same chant went up to heaven and day after day these Turks carried on their bloody work.” Around Lake Goeljik, Davis wrote, “thousands and thousands of Armenians, mostly innocent and helpless women and children, were butchered on its shores and barbarously mutilated.”</p>
<p>In her memoir, Ravished Armenia, <a href="http://www.genocide-museum.am/eng/online_exhibition_6.php">Aurora Mardiganian</a> described being raped and thrown into a harem – <a href="http://www.raymondibrahim.com/islam/muhammad-and-islams-sex-slaves/">akin to the experiences of today’s non-Muslims under Islamic State authority</a>.</p>
<p>Unlike thousands of other Armenian girls who were killed after being defiled, she managed to escape. <p>Because there is no dearth of evidence concerning the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide, 44 U.S. States have recognized it. South Dakota, which recently joined the list, <a href="http://armenianweekly.com/2015/02/26/south-dakota/">passed a resolution</a> in February 2015 calling on</p>
<p>Congress and the president of the United States to formally and consistently recognize and reaffirm the historical truth that the atrocities committed against the Armenian, Greek, and other Christians living in their historical homelands in Anatolia constituted genocide and to work towards equitable, stable, and durable Armenian-Turkish relations.</p>
<p>Turkey, of course, continues to deny that its forbears ever committed any genocide. As a group of American academics <a href="http://www.anca.org/assets/pdf/armenian_genocide_reference/professionalethics_lifton.pdf">wrote back in 1995</a>,</p>
<p>Despite the vast amount of evidence that points to the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide – eyewitness accounts, official archives, photographic evidence, the reports of diplomats, and the testimony of survivors – denial of the Armenian Genocide by successive regimes in Turkey has gone on from 1915 to the present.</p>
<p>Nor is the Islamic government of Turkey alone in denying the genocide. President Obama still refuses to acknowledge it – even though when he was running for office in 2008 <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20081117033141/http:/www.barackobama.com/2008/01/19/barack_obama_on_the_importance.php">he professed his</a>:</p>

Zoos Cannot Provide Sufficient Space- No matter how big some zoos try to make their enclosures, no matter how many pretty pictures they paint on the walls, and no matter how many branches they place around, these spaces in no way compare to the natural habitat that the animals were meant to be in. They are far smaller and far less stimulating. This is particularly the case for species that roam large distances in their native environment. Studies show that elephants (who typically travel 30 miles per day) are confined to spaces, on average, 1,000 times smaller than their wild habitats and that polar bears have spaces approximately 1,000,000 times smaller than their arctic territories. 2. Animals Suffer From Abnormal Repetitive Behavior- Abnormal repetitive behavior, also known as ARB, is the scientific term for repetitive behaviors demonstrated by captive animals. This can cover all sorts of strange looking behaviors that are indicative of stress including pacing, head bobbing, swaying from side to side, rocking, sitting motionless and biting themselves. These behaviors, which are typical of animals kept in captivity such as zoo animals, are attributed to depression, boredom and psychoses. Since most of us only have knowledge of these wild animals from seeing them at the zoo, it isn’t always easy to recognize these stress behaviors. Many zoo keepers aren’t even aware of these signs themselves, and if they are they certainly aren’t eager to explain them to us. With members of the public beginning to catch on, some zoos routinely give anti-depressants or tranquilizers in an attempt to control the problems. 3. Surplus Animals Are Killed- Surplus animals are unwanted animals that are a result of systematic overproduction by zoos. These surplus animals are either killed (and in some cases are fed to their fellow zoo inhabitants) or are sold to other zoos or dealers. Selling surplus animals is a profitable way for zoos to dispose of them, with many ending up at hunting ranches, pet shops, taxidermists, circuses, exotic meat industries, and even research facilities.
