America, Anaconda, and Andrew Bogut: 100 Nigerian Girls Abducted By Boko Haram Returned To Village @balleralert 100 Nigerian Girls Abducted By Boko Haram Returned To Village - blogged by @worldwidekeege ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The tragic horror that America witnessed almost 4 years ago has relived itself in Nigeria but this time the narrative paints a different ending. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Islamic extremist group Boko Haram which stands for “Western education is forbidden” hit hard again by abducting 110 girls from a Nigerian school in the city of Dapchi. The same group took over 300 girls from a school in Chibok 4 years ago. The group’s reason for kidnapping the girls is to teach them Islam and show them why they shouldn’t practice Western education, instead, they should be married off. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They make the girls live in forests and migrate from place to place running from officials looking to rescue them. All of the girls from the Chibok kidnapping years ago have not been returned but almost 100 of the Dapchi students were returned to their city early Wednesday morning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As parents and loved ones watched them walk into town, hearts were overjoyed with compassion for what the young ladies had gone through for over a month while being held captive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Nigerian officials were highly criticized for not preventing the attack and not doing enough in their rescue efforts to bring the girls home sooner. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hopefully, we can see more efforts for them in the future and maybe the rest of the Chibok girls will be released as well.

Africa, Community, and Empire: Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan Looking to Bring The Story of Mansa Musa to Life @balleralert Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan Looking to Bring The Story of Mansa Musa to Life-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ With the success of their first three projects: “Fruitvale Station,” “Creed” and “Black Panther”, super Director Ryan Coogler and Hollywood Star Michael B. Jordan are already teaming up for more projects. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to multiple reports, the duo is now looking to start a project centered around the life of Mansa Musa. Both Coogler and Jordan feel it is important to create influential films that reflect the Black community and the contributions that have been made throughout history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “You got to tell stories in today, or in the future,” says Jordan. “Or can we go back even further? There’s always one period that people want to go back to, but can we go back to Hannibal? Or Mansa Musa, destroying economies as he traveled? Can we go back to the Egyptians?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Mansa Musa was an influential African ruler in the fourteenth century. He was emperor of the Mali Empire, a land filled with gold, which he casually handed out during his religious expedition to Mecca, ultimately causing economic crises to cities that were unfamiliar with such wealth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ In 1324, Musa became the first Muslim ruler to trek almost four-thousand-miles. During his travels, he encountered rulers of the Middle East and Europe, which helped to put Mali on European maps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ He helped improve Islamic education and he also brought back government bureaucrats and architects. With the development of mosques and a major university, the city of Timbuktu became more urbanized. Musa ruled for 25 years and during that time, Western Africa was said to be at peace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ While there is no word on when this project will take off, the duo is already in pre-production for another film titled “Wrong Answer,” about a 2006 standardized testing scandal in Atlanta. The sequel to “Creed” is also on the way.

America, Beautiful, and Blood Moon: SUPER BLUE BLOOD MOON JANUARY 31st!!! . Have you heard?!? If you live on the western coast of North America, Asia (including the Middle East and eastern Russia), Australia, or New Zealand, you might be in for a lunar treat Jan 31st! But before we tell you how early you might have to wake up to see this, @science.sam explains what a Super Blue Blood Moon is below: . A SuperBlueBloodMoon is the combination of 3 different lunar events that RARELY coincide. . A SUPER moon is when a full moon occurs when the moon is at the closest point in its elliptical orbit to the Earth, called the perigee. Though it’s hard to distinguish with the naked eye, the moon appears about 14% brighter than usual. . A BLUE moon refers to the 2nd full moon in a month, and doesn’t really have anything to do with colour. While the phrase, “once in a blue moon” is used to describe something that’s rare, blue moons actually occur about once every 2.7 years (there will be another blue moon in March, but it won’t be fully eclipsed)! . A BLOOD moon happens when the moon is in full eclipse - meaning that the Earth is blocking direct light from the sun from getting to the moon. Because of the lack of direct sunshine on the moon, the only light hitting it is refracted through the earth’s shadow, giving it the reddish look we also see at sunset. Due to the tilt of the moon’s orbit, not every full moon results in a total eclipse, though there are 2-5 lunar eclipses a year (though not always where you can see em). . The exciting thing about the SuperBlueBloodMoon is that all 3 of these things are happening at once! South America, Asia, and Australia got treated to this back in 1982, and the last time North America experienced this phenomenon was 1866. . The eclipse (peak awesomeness) will happen at 1:30pm UTC, meaning those in Asia + Oceania will be able to see it in the evening of Jan 31st, and those in western North America before dawn. . Regardless of rarity, it’ll be a gorgeous opportunity to gaze up, and even more beautiful if viewed through binoculars (a lunar eclipse is less dangerous to your eyes than a solar eclipse). . Tag a buddy you want to watch this with! . (image credit: @NASA)
